Sustainable Cooperation!

BeeGarden grows everyday! Everyday new bees are born to pollinate your favorite fruits and vegetables. Everyday BeeGarden’s bees fly around Jönköping to collect honey, maybe they visit your garden or balcony as well.

This season Beegarden was honored to provide bee service to Vätterhem. Four hives were placed in  Strandängen where the growing neighborhood shows strong interest in sustainability. New modern buildings invite tenants who enjoy nature and comfort. In addition, Vätterhem provides gardening space where fresh herbs, vegetables and fruits can be grown to be ready for picking. A place like this is also perfect for bees where a variety of plants support stable growths of colonies in exchange for higher crops. The close location of old trees, especially old linden trees provide sweet nectar which can scent the entire area. The smell of sweet nectar also attracts bees, by which it is collected and transformed into a sweet, golden honey. Some of the honey will also be delivered to Vätterhem soon.

Vätterhem proves to be sustainable not only by its commitments but also by a variety of actions and services. Their cooperation with BeeGarden is another example of sustainability and care for the local environment. BeeGarden is proud to have such a strong partner and is looking for more local businesses in Jönköping that aim to be more sustainable.

The beginning of BeeGarden!

With the help of Jönköping city authority I was connected with a farmer who agreed for placing my hives at the land he is responsible for. This great news made me so excited that I needed some sugar to handle it. Lucky me pastry place is close by and I got my favorite Swedish desert called Semla! Usually one is enough but with such an occasion I had 2 at once!

I am going to start with 4 hives for my own use. Ola, my tutor offered one of his bee colonies so I still need to get 3 more. The best, would be to get a whole colony but I will also be very happy to get nucleus colony. Nucleus colony is a part of the strong bee family which was split into main family and new smaller family which with time will grow and become regular bee colony. There is still time so I can work on this.

My passion for bees will be registered as business where, I can implement all the ideas and help everyone to get real honey produced with the passion and close care for the bees. I want to distribute it locally that everyone know that they can get honey which has an impact on the local sustainability. So, by buying my honey you support local environment and society. There is other way of helping as well. If you live in Jönköping and you can use your balcony and green space to plant flowers which, bees like to visit. At the same time, bees will get attracted and pollinate your fruit trees or your special tomatoes.

Maybe it is a beginning but there is still so much to do. First the registration and then all other formalities. There will be also the fun stuff such as shopping! This will be the best. Getting small equipment such as protection outfit, tools, hives, frames and many more.

First time with bees ;)

Do you remember your first time? I remember it very well because I had few night of thinking about it and preparing for it. Believe me, life is not easy when all you think about is bees!

Books and internet made my passion on fire and it was not enough for me. At this time I just wanted to become more personal with bees. Ok, to be honest…… after all reading and seeing honey extraction, I wanted to see, smell and taste the honey straight from the frame! So I decided to meet a beekeeper and offer him my help. Great idea, but how to find a person with bees in the country I was relatively new, not knowing the language and area and not knowing much about place besides my grocery store. Well, I started to talk about it. Almost every person I met I was sharing my new passion, all my favorite facts about bees and then cutting suddenly that I cant expand my passion since I don’t know any beekeeper here.

Guess what?! The magic worked! With constant sharing of my passion I got some positive help. My very good friend Nickie E. (yes I mean you girl) contacted the bee association and after some time I got the address of beekeeper who was just 5 min away by bike. I still remember how excited I was and how hard it was to sleep a night before.

Let me share it with you….

What am I doing here?

The time has come to share passion for bees. All started from curiosity how hone is made and developed into passionate investigation or even a research to finally materialized in full involvement. Unfortunately, nothing happens so easy but you know what they say “if there is a will, there is a way!”

What do I want from bees?

Bees! Who thinks about bees? Most of the time we think about honey and then we think about bees and most of the time we think that bees can sting. With me it was a similar situation. I didn’t know much about bees but I knew I want the honey! So, my interest in bees started in need of possessing the honey. This came to me a couple of years ago during my early years at the university. Logically, to get honey I had to get involve with bees. As a student, it was impossible to have bees on the balcony of my student accommodation even, I was thinking about that. This crazy idea died and I am sure my flat mates were very happy about this for many reasons. At this time my knowledge about bees was very limited actually, I only knew they produce honey. I also knew that I need to learn more about bees. I only remembered stories my grandparent was telling me about his bees.

Bees flying in the net.

Internet became my Dr. Know! Articles, YouTube, forums and blogs helped me to catch up with, what bees are really for, besides honey of course. I also learned that honey production is not the most important. It is so easy to forget about the food! By pollination, bees with cooperation with plants are the biggest food producers on the world. But there is more! Bees are also genetic engineers. Those small insects move around genetic materials among plants helping them to create unique combination of genes for next generation of seeds. Imagine that, a plant which is not attractive for bees will not be visited by them which means, this genetic material will not be used and only most valuable genes will be kept in the nature. Mother nature is a genius!

Where beginners should start, I mean, where I should start!

Let’s go back to my private bee school. It was a great surfing on the net but sometimes I was irritated that I can’t experience in reality what I see or read about. Screen and mouse is not for learning how to keep bees. Not mention, that internet is everything the bad and the good. Often it was hard to know what do they mean and more I was reading less I knew what beekeeping is about.

Internet was not enough! I needed more so I looked for books and published guide about beekeeping. Personally, I believe that this is where every beekeeper should start. Read a simple beekeeping book for beginners. Don’t think that a book will make you a beekeeper, it is not that easy. For me it was a general overview on beekeeping and made me ask even more questions. At least, now, I knew what to ask about. Internet came with help again but there was never the full answer for my question, I guess because I am the question person.
